A couple of years ago, I started focusing less on the four leaf clovers and more on the art. I’m an artist, after all.
But, a few days ago, someone asked me, “Aren’t you the one who finds all the four leaf clovers?”
It’s not the first time I’ve been asked this, so I’ve decided to embrace it. Yes, I’m “the one who finds all the four leaf clovers”.
It started a few years ago when I was walking my dog and found a large patch of 4 and 5-leaf clovers. Picking a bunch of them seemed the obvious thing to do, but then, what to do with all of them? Framing them seemed the next obvious answer. From there, the natural progression was to give some as gifts, and to sell some in crafts stores and online. Then, I kept finding them, so I kept framing them.
Since I find so many so often, people frequently ask where/how to find a four leaf clover. The bad news is that I don’t really have an answer, except that one should look where there is clover growing. I usually just “feel” them; I don’t know another way to explain it.
The good news is that in a large enough field of clover, the presence of a lucky clover is almost guaranteed. Estimates say 1 in every 10,000 clovers will grow a 4th leaf, so find a very large pasture. And if you are lucky enough to find one 4-leaf clover, there is probably at least one more near it, because they tend to grow in small clusters.
The even better news is, you don’t have to bother picking through the grass, risking life and limb to chiggers in order to find a lucky clover; I still offer four leaf clovers in frames at soulbearing.com, and on eBay too.

Tony Williams needs a new heart and some luck.

He might have found the latter Wednesday when he discovered a rare nine-leaf clover in his front yard.

"Who knows?" said Williams, 42. "It can't hurt."

The find provided a welcome light moment for Williams, an Army veteran and former call-center worker who wears a backpack pump to power his heart. Heart disease runs in his family. He is hoping for a transplant.

Williams was looking for a four-leaf clover when he spotted the strange specimen. "At first I thought it was two of them stuck together," he said Thursday in his eastern Henrico County home. "But it never came apart."

The clover has eight clearly visible leaves — technically leaflets, which are parts of leaves — with a ninth tucked under the others. Williams is keeping it in a cup with water.

Three leaflets, of course, are the norm for clover. Four is "somewhat unusual" — hence the notion that a four-leafer is a good-luck charm — and more than that is even less common, said John Hayden, a University of Richmond biologist.

"I've seen five and six, but I can't remember ever seeing more leaflets than that," Hayden said. "I would judge eight or nine leaflets to be quite rare indeed."

Stewart Ware, a College of William and Mary botanist, called Williams' clover "very, very, very rare."

"Quite an interesting find," Ware said, "and definitely an extremely unusual one."

Williams is exploring ways to preserve the little oddity. He is willing to donate it to a museum or agency that would display it. "I want to continue to show it to other people … to show it to kids."

Williams lives with his wife, Akia, a VCU Medical Center lab technician, and daughters Kalifa, 11, and Tokhia, 3.

Williams competes with Kalifa to see who can spot the most four-leaf clovers. "When he told me (of his find), I didn't believe him at first," Kalifa said.

She thinks she just might beat her dad's discovery someday.

Now that would take some luck.

I guess now would be a good time to explain my four-leaf clover charm.

When I was in Kindergarten, we were all assigned hooks outside of the classroom where we would hang our coat and backpack during the day. To distinguish these hooks, we each had a different symbol taped above it. Mine was a four-leaf clover.

A few days ago, Kim received an envelope in the mail with charms she planned on giving out as Christmas presents. Because it had shipped out late, the manufacturer stuck a few extra charms in there. One of the extra ones was a four-leaf clover. When I saw it, I was instantly reminded of my coat hook from Kindergarten. It was kind of strange because I haven’t thought about that in years. I started Kindergarten when I was five years old and now I’m seventeen, a senior in high school.

I asked Kim if I could keep the charm and she reluctantly gave it up after I told her why I wanted to have it. I plan on wearing it at my high school graduation because after all, that’s where it all started. With a four leaf clover. The symbol gave me luck when I started a new chapter in my life twelve years ago, and it will give me luck as I end it.

When my husband and I first became engaged, he warned me that a mysterious force called “The Sieghart Luck” followed him everywhere. Not being a natural born Sieghart, I was unfamiliar with this phenomenon, but after an explanation, I determined that “Murphy’s Law” had undergone a simple name change.

You know Murphy. He the one who makes sure that if anything can go wrong, it will.

I was raised somewhat superstitiously. We didn’t have to go as far as avoiding sidewalk cracks or midnight black cats, but my mom does have a list of bizarre happenings that are rumored to cause ill fortune. My mom and her friend used to be quite interested in psychics and having their fortunes told and once, when helping to clean out the “gone out of business” bookstore where I worked, I came across a box of tarot cards on the back of a shelf. The box was quite damaged, but the cards were intact and quite pretty, I thought and my boss told me to just take them home. I thought my mother would like them.

She didn’t.

After an inquisition as to how exactly I obtained them, she went fleeing into the night in her pajamas to remove the cards from our home. What she did with them, I don’t know, but I was told never to touch tarot cards that have “found” me. In order to avoid similar curses, we we were never allowed to play with Ouija boards, either.

With the exception of the Ouija board thing that I just can’t seem to shake, I prefer to live on the wild side of superstitions. I don’t believe that a broken mirror will bring you any more misfortune than “The Sieghart Luck” or that the stem of a four leaf clover will point you to a magical, gleaming pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Still, I do have to admit that “The Sieghart Luck” has been quite present, generally causing such harmless shenanigans as breaking the oven on a major holiday when twenty hungry people are sitting in my living room or taunting us with a quick pick lottery ticket bearing six numbers with each a single number away from the winning digits. I didn’t think much of it until “it” happened a few months back.

I was out with friends one night, having a good time dancing when I caught the eye of an acquaintance. She had an eerie stare and an unexpected, indescribable feeling of dread seemed to overtake me for a second.

Along with tarot card curses, I had heard stories of something that could cause one great harm...The Evil Eye. Some people, I suppose, were rumored to have this power and able to give a look that was capable of inflicting injury or bad luck for the person to whom it was directed. My Mexican relatives would call this “mal do ojo” and it’s serious business.

I chose to forget about it, particularly since I don’t know any curanderos who could perform the appropriate elimination sweep, but since that time, even I have to admit that “The Sieghart Luck” has taken a turn for the worst.

My daughter’s eating disorder had suddenly gained a tremendous amount of strength. While still emotionally reeling from having to take her to another treatment facility just the night before, I received a phone call that my son had been knocked unconscious in gym class and appeared to have sustained a pretty significant concussion. We came home from the hospital to find my dishwasher once again refusing to cooperate, my clothes dryer making a screeching noise and a pictureless TV.

My world was out of control and since I don’t have time for a real one, I had a mini-nervous breakdown. This prompted my mother to purchase a lucky eye bracelet from the Home Shopping Network guaranteed to banish the Evil Eye curse that was bestowed upon me.

Oddly, despite my non-belief in lucky amulets, it seemed to work the second I put it on. My daughter is doing quite well in treatment this time around and my son not only recovered from his head injury, his first diving meet of the season proved to be a record breaking one for him. Neither my husband nor I are what anyone would call “handy”, but we actually repaired all of the tag teaming appliances ourselves.

I may have to re-think my position on superstitions. Either way, this bracelet isn’t coming off.

''I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands better living, for my club, my community, and my country," I said proudly. "That's the 4-H pledge."
"What's 4-H?" my friend, Taylor, asked me curiously.
For the past year I've been telling my friend all about 4-H. 4-H is a program for young people ages nine to 21. I'm 11 years old, and I just finished my second year in the Chilliwack 4-H Dog Club. There are lots of different projects in 4-H. Clubs in the Chilliwack area include projects with beef, swine, dog, dairy, horse, rabbit, cavy, sheep and photography.
"I chose to join the dog club because I have always loved dogs," I explained to Taylor. "Plus, I don't live on a farm so you can imagine that I don't have any cattle, and I'm sure the neighbours wouldn't like pigs and horses in the yard!"
As a new member, it may seem overwhelming at first, but you will get to know all the other members by participating in club meetings and activities, and have a lot of fun. In my first year, I didn't know what to expect, but the other members were great at helping me get used to things. My first club speech was nerve-racking but I did it, and during this year's speech it was a lot easier to get up in front of my club. I even went on to compete at the district competition. I also did my first demonstration this year and went on to districts for that too. For demonstrations, two people team up to teach the audience something (like how to bake cookies).
"I've heard you talk a lot about fairs. What's that all about?" Taylor asked me.
"We go to summertime fairs to compete against members from lots of other clubs with the same project, in the same level. My first fair was a little scary: the show ring, the judges and all the people. But at the same time, I loved it because I was doing what I'd seen all the dog people on TV do. I felt special and important as an exhibitor in the ring." I smiled remembering the ribbons I'd won. With experience I've become more successful in all aspects of 4-H competition and any nervousness has now become excitement.
I'm not a senior member yet, but when I am, I will be able to earn Grade 11 and 12 course credits and apply for 4-H scholarships. If I stay in 4-H till I'm 20 years old, I could be a B.C. 4-H Ambassador.
Taylor's interest was piqued: "That sounds awesome," she exclaimed.
"I can see you've met a lot of new people and made a ton of friends. Maybe I should join. How can I do that?"

W hat do Roy Rogers, Dolly Parton, Orville Redenbacher, Reba McEntire, Herschel Walker, Dan Reeves, and Johnny Carson all have in common? They are all 4-H alumni!
This week celebrated National 4-H week. All across the country new faces are learning about the program, and alumni are recalling the great times they had in 4-H and all of the important life skills they learned. Become part of the action, enroll today!
The 4-H program was established in 1902 and has steadily progressed to where it is today. Today 4-H is the largest informal youth education program. The symbol for 4-H is a four leaf clover. Each of the leaves represents one of the H's: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. The 4-H pledge incorporates the whole self. It is: I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service and my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world. The 4-H colors are white, representing purity or wholesomeness, and green, representing life, growth, and youth. The informal education process that the 4-H program uses is "Learning by Doing." We want all youth, ages 8-18, to do just that! Youth ages 5-7 can enroll in "Cloverbuds" which is a non-competitive introduction to 4-H.
A common misconception of 4-H is that it is only for farm kids or that you have to live on a farm to be in 4-H. Neither of these is true. Today, 4-H involves more than 6.5 million young people from cities, suburbs, rural areas, farms and everything in between. 4-H has many activities that are not animal-related. These include gardening, sportfishing, ceramics, photography, woodworking, cake decorating, clothing, robotics, model rocketry, plus many more. There are also small animal projects that would be easy to do for kids living in town, such as rabbit and dog projects.
This week current 4-H'ers visited the grade schools to talk about their projects and experiences in 4-H. If you are interested and want more information please call or stop by the Extension Office and we would love to answer your questions and get new youth enrolled. We have 14 great 4-H clubs all across the county and would love to match you with the best fit for your family.
The 4-H program also offers many great leadership and citizenship trips, camps and opportunities that teach great life skills such as communication, citizenship, decision-making, leadership, interpersonal relations and community and global awareness. These skills help set 4-H members apart when it comes time to apply for college, scholarships, and jobs. Get your child ahead of the game with this great program. 4-H is great, get into it!
The Logan County Extension Office will be hosting a 4-H open house on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. This open house will display the many different project areas and have people available for any questions you may have.

How lucky is Providence?

How lucky are the several hundred thousand people who call Providence home?

Pretty damned lucky, and now there's a study to prove it.

Men's Health has named Providence the #40 most lucky town in the US in its brand-new "America's 100 Luckiest Towns" ranking, released today.

What's lucky?

Men's Health has created a four-leaf-clover of calculus to come up with a place's luck: the most lottery and sweepstake winners, the most hole-in-ones on the golf course, the fewest lightning strikes, the least deaths from falling objects, and the lowest debt due to playing the lottery and race betting.

"Luck is basically our modern world's magic," said David Zinczenko, editor in chief of the magazine. "People need to believe in luck because it allows them to give a name to the randomness of life, and when you name something, you have more power over it."

That's lucky!

The magazine named San Diego, CA, the country's luckiest town based on prize-winning stats on multiple jackpot winners, low lightning strike count and few lightning-related injuries and death, according to Zinczenko. Behind it came Baltimore, MD, Phoenix, AZ, Wilmington, DE, and Richmond, VA (for the entire list of the the luckiest towns, go here).

Luckiest in New England

Providence's #40 ranking was in fact the highest ranking of New England city or town. Manchester, NH came in at #53, Portland, ME at #63, Boston at #82, Burlington, VT at #87, and Bridgeport, CT in the unluckiest bracket at #93.

Shortly after JoAnn Maroney's daughter died in 1995, Maroney went to Our Lady of Czestochowa and asked God for a sign that her daughter was OK. She finished her prayer and walked to her car, and found a four-leaf clover.

"I knew it was a sign," she said. She had never found a four-leaf clover before.

She started finding four-leaf clovers everywhere — in her backyard, in parks. She took each finding as a sign. The signs led her to the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Massachusetts, which has a labyrinth where she found another four-leaf clover. She took that as another sign and visited more labyrinths, where she found more four-leaf clovers.
"I'm not one of those woo-woo people. I'm kind of a normal person. I'm a businesswoman," she said. "I think you have to be open to these things. I think we all, probably, if we were open to these things, would find more signs, if you will."
Maroney decided she needed to create a community labyrinth.
She thought the James A. Michener Art Museum would be the perfect place to do it. And so did the museum board.

Katsiff said a community labyrinth will be a historical, cultural and artistic addition to the museum's offerings.
"Labyrinths have a long history. They go back to medieval times," Katsiff said.
"It's an introduction to a kind of environmental sculpture. Today, there are many artists who do site-specific work. Labyrinths are kind of an early example of that. ... It will add an experience for visitors to see what a labyrinth is like."
A labyrinth is typically a flat circular or elliptical area with a path that follows a circuitous route from the exterior to the interior. The center of the labyrinth is visible from all places along the route, as are the entrance and exit (which are the same).
"Just when you think you're close to the center, it pulls you from the center," Maroney said of a labyrinth's path. "It really replicates the journey of life. Where am I going? Where do I belong? All the questions you ask yourself."
Walking in a labyrinth becomes a kind of meditation. Maroney said, "You really have to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. You kind of start letting go of all the distractions. You kind of start to just be open and receptive to the thoughts that come in."
The museum agreed to let Maroney and the committee she formed — of friends, neighbors, a landscape architect and a labyrinth designer — use some land it owns at the corner of Ashland and Pine streets.
Maroney said she originally was concerned that the corner was busy and the traffic would disrupt the peace of the labyrinth, but a labyrinth designer told her the site was perfect and "the labyrinth will bring some peace to this busy intersection and provide balance."
Maroney and her committee expect the labyrinth to cost $10,000 to $12,000. They are collecting donations of money, materials and volunteer hours. The Michener Museum already has donated $1,000 to the project.
Maroney said she hopes to break ground on the labyrinth in March and finish it by May.

Shortly after JoAnn Maroney's daughter died in 1995, Maroney went to Our Lady of Czestochowa and asked God for a sign that her daughter was OK. She finished her prayer and walked to her car, and found a four-leaf clover.

"I knew it was a sign," she said. She had never found a four-leaf clover before.

She started finding four-leaf clovers everywhere — in her backyard, in parks. She took each finding as a sign. The signs led her to the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Massachusetts, which has a labyrinth where she found another four-leaf clover. She took that as another sign and visited more labyrinths, where she found more four-leaf clovers.
"I'm not one of those woo-woo people. I'm kind of a normal person. I'm a businesswoman," she said. "I think you have to be open to these things. I think we all, probably, if we were open to these things, would find more signs, if you will."
Maroney decided she needed to create a community labyrinth.
She thought the James A. Michener Art Museum would be the perfect place to do it. And so did the museum board.

Every so often, I get a chain email that contains a prayer, and then the admonition that I should forward the prayer to 10 or 15 friends, and sit back and wait for something wonderful to happen.

I always delete it.

There’s a huge difference between prayers and superstitions. Superstitions involve doing something -- whether it’s carrying a rabbit’s foot or sending out chain letters -- and then expecting definite results.

But it’s dangerous to believe prepackaged formulas will produce predictable blessings in our lives.

This notion is the premise of “The Prayer of Jabez,” in which author Bruce Wilkinson claims there is a certain prayer found in the Old Testament that God will always answer.

Religion can deteriorate into superstition, when folks believe that if they do X, Y and Z, they can force God’s hand. After all, God isn’t a slot machine, and you can’t deposit your prayers and then wait for the big payoff.

It is superstitious, for example, to think God will keep you from getting in a car accident because you’re toting your Bible in the glove compartment or wearing a cross around your neck. You might as well depend on a four-leaf clover or a lucky penny.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a crucifix or carrying a prayer book with you, but they aren’t amulets, charged with some secret power to protect you.

And tithing to the church can be a good thing, but some people do so because they think it will ensure God’s blessings. This sounds suspiciously like knocking on wood to ward off evil.

“I went to church and said my prayers, but my life still caved in,” says the disappointed person who thought religion was as straightforward as following the directions in a recipe.

Truth be told, when it comes to God, there are no magical fixes.

We may spend years dutifully obeying the Ten Commandments, praying fervently and doing good works. And still we may lose our spouse, our job and our own health.

As the story of Job reveals, there may be sound reasons, which only God knows, for why we must confront the things we dread.

Reading Scripture, praying and attending services, as many well-meaning people do, are all wonderful practices. Still, there is something deep and mysterious that must underpin all the trappings.

It’s a sincere heart that surrenders entirely to God. A heart that realizes God never promised that if we followed a certain formula, we would be guaranteed an easy life.

As for me, I pray for a heart that keeps me centered on God. And I pray to fully accept that God doesn’t always answer our prayers exactly in the way we envision.

But he will give us the grace to endure whatever comes.

The results, however, showed that luck is not a natural trait. Only a very few people who played the lottery won any money at all, and those few were evenly split between lucky and unlucky people.
So if being lucky isn't inherited... where does it come from?

Duluth Couple Discovers Patch of Four-Leaf Clovers

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - A few minutes in the back yard turned out to a stroke of good luck for a Duluth couple.

While grilling up dinner Matt Citarella and Ann Marie Scanlon discovered a patch of four-leaf clovers. First they found one, and then another, and then another one.

When the counting was done they collected 18 of the lucky charms in West Duluth.

According to tradition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally.

"Who knows, maybe we can start selling these, said Citarella. "This is our good fortune, selling them, if you can't find one, buy one."

It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.

Secret Story: Four leaf clover

I have been using The Secret on and off for months. It definitely works on small stuff and it also worked on a huge problem of mine...bad anxiety! But lately my faith has wavered on other things I want badly and seem to be taking awhile. So I asked the universe to send me a sign to keep my faith going!
I asked to see a four leaf clover. Didn't see one that day :( and the next day went by and nothing. That night I felt the feeling of seeing the clover and put it out there and decided it would happen when it was time and I went on with my night.
I was looking on a website and I clicked on an advertisement that caught my eye keeping in mind this website had nothing to do with four leaf clovers! LOL When I was going to click out of it I noticed at the bottom of the page, a four leaf clover symbol!!!!!! It was a logo for sponsors for that site. I froze when I saw it! Holy cow! It just showed up right when I needed believing and faith! And wait.......literally after I closed the site I looked up to watch TV and one of the characters on the show had a four leaf clover on their shirt! My mind was blown again!! So even though you experienced "The Secret" and it worked, but your faith wavered somewhere along the line ASK the universe to renew your faith. It will get you on the right track!
PS. I draw a four leaf clover on my wrist every day to remind me! I really wanted this bracelet with a four leaf clover that I saw online from Heidi Klum's collection but they stopped selling it. It would be the perfect reminder and motivation I need so I am using The Secret to attract it to me! So until I receive it I will draw my four leaf clover everyday! : )

My friend and I were discussing various "charms" after his rocket boots theoretically rendered his lucky horseshoe pointless (although perhaps not, as he is a poor pilot), and we got onto the discussion of a Four Leaf Clover accessory that would slightly increase the drop rate of rare items from defeated monsters. In regards to obtaining such an item, we thought it could be obtained as an extremely rare (perhaps 1 in 100,000) drop from cut grass, a drop from snatchers/man eaters, or could also be thrown into floating island chests.

Finding a good friend is like finding a four-leaf clover: It rarely ever happens, but when it does you never forget it. The first time I met Amy* we didn’t quite hit it off. It always seems to happen that way. I thought she was an intimidating, mean girl who was all talk, and she probably thought I was the most boring person alive. She always tells me I don’t show enough emotion, mostly because I don’t shower her with affectionate hugs and kisses every time I see her.

I guess I play hard to get.

The first time we went out together, she got so wasted she passed out and peed herself before the party even started. I was going to introduce her to my boyfriend that night, had she been conscious. He was not impressed. However, her tolerance for alcohol has improved significantly since that incident. Keep in mind that she is 5 feet tall and less than 110 pounds. She can’t quite keep up with the big kids.

One summer night we bonded over a bottle of Patrón — pretty much the entire bottle. It was like our first date. A typical date starts with drinks, then dinner and then maybe something fun. After more than enough tequila, we couldn’t decide where to eat so we skipped dinner entirely. This is a common occurrence. We’re so indecisive when it comes to food, no one can stand us. We knew we’d be good friends from that moment on.

Amy is a year older than me and naturally takes on the role of the nurturer, making sure I take my vitamins and drink my juice. Luckily we share the same size clothes, so I often leave it up to her to dress me. She also cooks, which is a great perk. She always has an answer to everything, thanks to Google. And she is the only friend who will tell me when I look bad or when I’m being a psycho bitch, unlike everyone else who says, “He’s just being an asshole. You’re too good for him,” or “Don’t worry you look so hot” when my shoes don’t even match. These things matter.

When it comes to being my wingwoman, Amy takes the cake. We even have matching scars to show for it. Somehow we have never been able to leave Stingaree unscathed. One night we were waiting in the VIP section to go backstage with LMFAO. It was

10 p.m. I felt ugly, tired and definitely way too sober.

Suddenly a bald, burly man grabbed my hand and said, “You’re too pretty to be looking so sad.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I said. I tried to flee, but his hand was three times the size of mine and he had the grip of an ogre.

“Let me buy you a drink,” he said. “What do you like?”

“Patrón,” I said.

He led me to the bar, still gripping my hand, and ordered three shots of Patrón. He had a massive clip of $100 bills. I wondered why he ordered three when there were only two of us. Then the shots came and he lined them up neatly in front of me.

“Here you go,” he said. I took one of the shots and he looked on expectantly.

“They’re all for you, sweetie,” he said. Oh, great. I couldn’t look like a little girl so I took them all and tried to make a beeline for Amy, but she got to me first.

“What the hell are you doing?” she yelled. “We’re supposed to be backstage by now!”

The bald man ordered three more shots of Patrón. This time we each had one. By now it was too late to get backstage.

“Do you party?” he asked us. We were too naïve at this time to understand.

“We are partying,” we both said. He just shook his head and proceeded to “party” off of his hand in front of the bartender.

He then took us to every bar in the club and ordered shots after shots after shots. Just because I have a boyfriend didn’t mean Amy couldn’t enjoy some free drinks. After all, she was missing LMFAO. Eventually the bald man started getting attached, and we started looking like his cheap escorts. So Amy initiated the perfect exit plan, which we executed with ease.

Maybe all those shots weren’t such a good idea, hence our matching scars. Each of us has an ugly and deformed scar on our right knee which still has not healed, a year later. She got hers when her heel broke and she fell, leaving the club. I got mine later that night falling off of someone’s lawn onto the sidewalk. Don’t ask.

It turned out the bald man was a business executive from New York who had all the hookups to every club in San Diego, Los Angeles and New York. Dang it.

Amy’s now moving away and I’ll need a new wingwoman. But we’re never too far apart. When there’s Patrón, we’ll always find our way back to each other.

   •   Does anybody else feel like “a knight without armor in a savage land” when they surf the Web or try to navigate Facebook? (And what old cowboy show did that line come from?)

   •   Isn’t it a little humbling when your 7-year-old granddaughter beats you in checkers and you didn’t even go easy on her?
   •   Do you think that Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly has it figured out for next season?
   •   Do you think it will take people as long to figure out how to pronounce Buttigieg as it did to master Luecke? That is if Pete Buttigieg gets elected, right?
   •   John Weiner, the New York congressman? Did he really have to draw attention to himself in a humiliating fashion to get a little name recognition?
   •   How come I would probably have an easier time gulping down a spider than having to walk through one of its semi-invisible webs hanging in a doorway?
   •   Who else doesn’t have the patience for crossword puzzles?
   •   Isn’t it kind of eye-opening to have out-of-towners visiting and realize that we do have some pretty neat things in our city when we show them around?
   •   Wouldn’t you agree that women understand fantasy football and baseball drafts about as much as men grasp the importance of a wedding shower? And while we’re on that subject, young couples who are the recipients of those showers usually aren’t the ones who really need all those gifts, wouldn’t you agree?

"When is the last time you found a four-leaf clover? Don’t some people just seem to have a knack at that?"
It's been a while since I found one, but I used to have the knack for it. Maybe I do need bifocals. The trick is pattern recognition: you gotta train your eye to jump to the "one of these things just doesn't belong." It's that old 90-degree angle between the leaves, not the common-joe 120 degrees.
And did you know the clovers turn during the day? On a bright sunny morning, they'll all be facing the east. And late in the afternoon, facing west.

Yes I have just the one at the moment which I found around three years ago, I keep it in a tiny plastic bag inside a book next to a picture of a lovely lady from the US who was friends with me for almost a year via email, who had an incredible life, but sadly lost out to cancer on December 5th 2010, I think of her every day and hope the 4 leaf clover will bring me luck so that I can help with the funding of a clinic she helped to form for girls with drug addiction in 2007 .. RIP Melissa xx

I have found dozens of four-leaf clovers this year. It's a record year for me, for sure. Five and six-leaf ones, too. I don't bother saving them anymore, though.

Talk show host, movie actor and all-round funny guy, Jimmy Fallon did such a bang-up job of hosting the 2010 Emmy Awards that he’s our Number One pick for hosting the Oscars in 2012. Fallon was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Saugerties, New York, the younger of two children. In 1998, Fallon got his big break: an audition for Saturday Night Live (SNL), earning a spot as a Featured Player for the 1998-1999 season. Promoted to the main cast in the summer of 1999, he began co-hosting "Weekend Update" with Tina Fey in 2000. After six seasons, he left SNL in 2004.

In 2008, it was announced that Fallon would take over Conan O’Brien’s Late Night when O’Brien took over The Tonight Show. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon premiered on March 2, 2009. In honor of his Irish heritage, the floor leading to the stage for his show has a four-leaf clover on it. “That’s what I walk out on every night. It brings me good luck,” Fallon stated. “It reminds me so much of where I came from.”

In March 2010, Fallon was awarded the Irish Spirit Award from The American Ireland Fund. During his speech, he said, “My life has changed so much in the past year, but being Irish hasn’t changed.” Most recently, in honor of two years of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Ben & Jerry’s released a limited edition flavor, Late Night Snack.

It's not that I'm superstitious -- although I take great care in avoiding cracks in the sidewalk. I just figured I'd have nothing to lose by trying to introduce a bit o' luck into my life.

I considered the obvious options: a rabbit's foot (kind of gross); a four-leaf clover (I might look for one if I didn't know my neighbors don't always clean up after their dogs); a horse shoe; or eating Lucky Charms cereal every morning (but I'm actually more of a Fruity Pebbles gal).

Hence my newest -- and quite possibly my most cosmic-altering -- accessory: a charm bracelet.

So ... now what? Is the luck automatic? Am I good to go?

I'm guessing a lucky-charm bracelet is only as good as the charms you put on it. My collection so far is small but meaningful: An agate, which is a reminder of childhood days spent agate hunting along the beaches of Lake Superior; and a star pendant given to me by a relative that I crafted into a clip charm.

And the oh-so-noticeable glittery Hello Kitty? Uh, well, that's just super cute.

As fun as all this customizing has been, I have to wonder what kind of luck $5-apiece charms could really conjure. Could anything with "made in China" stamped on it really hold the wonder and magic I'm looking for?

Then again, maybe I'm looking at this all wrong.

Maybe it's more about the good vibes and positive feelings that come from having something meaningful or sentimental close at hand. If a Hello Kitty swinging from my wrist is what it takes for warm and fuzzy feelings to make all of the not-so-fun stuff less noticeable, then so be it.

Upside: I'll become a major contender at the bingo hall. Downside: Nothing happens, but I still have a funky, fabulous bracelet.

Time and a couple of lottery tickets will tell.

Four leaf clovers are usually a rare find amongst a field of 3 leaf clovers (aka the shamrock clover), which is why they are considered lucky. Actually, the odds of finding one are about 10,000 to 1. True four leaf clovers have three leaves of approximately equal size, and a fourth leaf that will be slightly smaller. To the Irish, each leaf has a different symbolism. The first three leaves represent hope, faith, and love, and the rare fourth leaf represents luck. So if you don't feel you need luck, you could be different and get a three leaf clover tattoo, but if you want the luck, you can get a four leaf clover tattoo!

It is impossible to breed for leaf clovers because it is a genetic defect, but some companies do clone them. Of course, this is in its own way symbolic of manufacturing luck, so I feel it sort of takes the meaning out of it. I think any Irish person would tell you that a cloned four leaf clover is not the same as a naturally occurring one! But for those who believe in the luck of the Irish, getting a four leaf clover tattoo may bring you some luck. Sometimes in different tattoos you will also see a 4 leaf clover with playing cards, dice, rabbits'feet and horse shoes. The idea is that some of these other symbols represent luck, so in combination they create an extra lucky four leaf clover tattoo. Dice and cards are symbols of things where luck is needed!
Why Get a 3 Leaf Clover Shamrock Tattoo

St Patrick used the shamrock to represent to the Irish the concept of the holy trinity, which is partly why the shamrock and color green are associated with st Patrick's Day. So you may opt for the three leaf clover shamrock tattoo for religious reasons. This is actually a great idea for Irish Catholics who feel that they have all the luck they need. After all, who needs luck when they have God in their corner? Maybe the three leaf clovers are in a sense luckier than four leave clover tattoos after all!

Today, March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day and the day that the shamrock gets a lot of attention or at least the four leaf clover. By definition according to answers.com a shamrock is: “Any of several plants, such as a clover or wood sorrel, having compound leaves with three small leaflets, considered the national emblem of Ireland.” A four leaf clover is considerably rare but some people seem to have luck finding them.

A true four leaf clover usually has leaf number four a little bit smaller than the other three leaves. Each of the leaves of these clovers have a meaning:

As you notice the fourth leaf is luck and that is why only four leaf clover are lucky.

There are even websites online where you can buy genuine clovers. Some of the ones that you find are not the true shamrock that you are looking for. The real deal comes from the white clover plant aka trifolium repens. You may find others such as the Pepperwort, Water Clvoer or Oxalis that also produce four leaves but they are not the original shamrock.

Who would have known there was so much to learn about the shamrock?

What connects the four leaf Clover, corned beef and cabbage, Guinness, and the catholic church? Add March 17th to the celebration and you get St. Patrick's day.
It started hundreds of years ago as a religious holiday in Ireland, St. Patrick's day has now become a huge celebration of Irish culture. The holiday is also celebrated in Great Britain, the US, Australia and New Zealand, thanks to Irish immigrants who spread the tradition.
Green clothes are the day's fashion, symbolizing the green shamrock- Ireland’s national's symbol. According to the legend, the shamrock was used by St Patrick to teach the Irish people about the holy trinity of mother, son and the holy spirit. He is considered by the church till this day, to the patron Saint of Ireland.
The traditions took the three leaf clover or Shamrock a step further to a 4 leaf clover – a very rear find. The 3 leaves stand for faith hope and love and the fourth leaf stands for luck.
Not much of the religious day's character remains in modern times considering the massive consumption of alcohol on St Patrick's day –especially Guinness. It goes together with the Irish blessing Slainte (good health in Irish), Erin Go Bragh (Ireland Forever), special Irish sayings such as "May the Lord keep you in His hand and never close His fist too tight," "May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past," and more.
Colorful parades are held in many counties around the world, one of the biggest is held in New York City –and attracts around 150,000 people every year. Here are the seven good-luck charms that I swear by.

My family is not Irish, but what my mother lacks in Irish roots she makes up for in superstitious beliefs. Besides the whole broken-mirror-seven-years-bad-luck thing, I also couldn’t walk under a ladder or open an umbrella indoors.

My Jewish mom, who flips homes as a hobby, buries St. Joseph statues in the front lawn of her listings. She figuratively spits by saying “pooh, pooh” in reaction to something especially evil. She knocks on wood to keep something bad from happening when she thinks she might’ve jinxed herself. She says she gets all of this from her grandmother.

Without fail she says “God bless you” when someone sneezes. But she also believes that when a person sneezes during a conversation, whatever has just been said "is the truth."

And, though superstitions aren’t logical, I've grown up believing that the idea of luck can be comforting—especially when we’re so often reminded that life is fragile and things are beyond our control.

Perhaps that is what family traditions are all about, anyway. They call to mind tender memories of times gone by and quirky great-grandmothers whom we dearly miss. There is nothing silly or superstitious about that.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day and the "luck of the Irish," I wanted to share seven of my lucky charms with you.

1. Thomas Jefferson's Impassive Stare

The rarely used $2 bill, which occasionally turns up in birthday cards and souvenir drawers, is my No. 1 lucky charm. Since I turned 16, I’ve kept a crisp $2 bill folded in my wallet under my driver’s license. My mom gave me the 2005 bill and told me to carry it with me always.

2. Penny in the Getty

While tossing a coin into a fountain for good luck is a custom undertaken in many parts of the world, it is most common to watch this practice at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy. Unfortunately, I don't live in Rome. I live here in Encino. So I like to carry on the tradition here and throw a penny in the Getty fountain upon every visit.

3. Lucky 7:11
The time 7:11 is considered lucky in my household. I have no idea why, and we don’t even make a wish. We just scream “7:11!” and look at our clocks to note the time. If we catch it in the morning and in the evening, it’s a doubly lucky day. You can't set an alarm clock or timer though; that's cheating.

4. Broken Breastbone

When my Dad carved a turkey or chicken, he’d always leave the dried breastbone for me and my younger sister when we were kids. We would tug on the wishbone, each making a wish. After the bone broke, the person with the bigger piece would have her wish granted.

5. Fallen Eyelashes

A stray eyelash is seen as a wish maker, much like the wishbone. If an eyelash falls on my cheek, I always put it on my finger, make a wish and blow it away.

6. Zen Bamboo
When I first moved out on my own, my mom bought me three stalks of bamboo. She said it was lucky. The vase has moved with me from apartment to apartment, and so far, it's the only plant my black thumb has been able to keep alive!

7. When You Wish Upon a Star
A person lucky enough to see a shooting star is supposed to make a secret wish.

And speaking of secret wishes, my mother always told me that you’re never supposed to tell anyone else what you’ve wished for. But today, I'll make an exception.

St. Patrick's Day is the perfect time to consider luck, good and bad.

While people talk about the luck of the Irish in a whimsical, mythological way, you have to wonder if there's anything to it.

Ireland was, after all, invaded by the Vikings, plundered by Cromwell's army, subjected to a plantation system, stripped of its native tongue and suffered through a terrible famine.

It was, alas, a potato famine in the 1800s that drove millions from that country to America, where they were lucky enough to start over in a land of plenty and promise.

Bad luck therefore led to good luck.

Or was it just fate?

I have a friend who has carried a rabbit's foot for several decades and considers it a good luck charm.

It was not so lucky, however, for the rabbit.

People have all kinds of talismans hanging around their necks, from their rearview mirrors, tucked inside clothing or hidden in their houses to protect them from bad luck.

Some of the usual good luck omens include horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, piebald horses, coins found heads up, numbers like seven, ladybugs, and the unexplainable tradition of actors telling one another to "break a leg" just before going on stage.

All of which proves they don't have to make sense. They just have to be believed.

Luck, it seems, is a state of mind, a belief that something good will happen.

Unless, of course, it doesn't.

You don't have to be a physicist to conclude that if there is good luck there is also an equal amount of bad luck.

In the old West, aces and eights were considered a dead-man's hand in poker. If a black cat crosses your path, surely something bad is about to happen. Or not.

Lucky charms are just that, charming, if not ridiculous.

Half a chance

And yet we cling to luck like a life raft in the turbulent ocean of life.

Mainly because we need to believe we have half a chance to be successful, whether we deserve it or not.

That you were born in this country to nice people who fed you and educated you and protected you from bad things might be, at best, a statistical miracle.

That you met your soul mate in a library on a rainy afternoon because she was studying and you were looking for shelter could have been a happy happenstance.

That you barely missed being hit by a bus because you stopped to help a little old lady pick up her handkerchief could be considered a chivalrous coincidence.

Life, it seems, is as fickle as a coin toss.

So be careful out there today, look both ways for leprechauns, and may the luck of the Irish be with you. The good luck, that is.
